Myths of time

Lesson One
Where are we? When are we? We’ve gone back to when the west was wild! Wild rivers. Rugged mountains! An unknown time to explore. We will face them all and will need your help on our incredible adventure. At the very start we’ll find out who’s keepin’ the peace (and a piece of your heart!) It’s a bonanza of an adventure and it’s time to view and vote! Is it (based-on-actual) reality tv or a smoky fantasy?

Lesson Two

It’s time to bust myths bronco style! The Wild West, aka the Old West, is often considered an astoundingly awesome period in American history that every little kid who has watched a cowboy movie or TV show wants to emulate. Now, clearly pop culture has turned much of the true West into legend -- but the basics were true, right? While we’re here won’t we have to be ready for the lawlessness, the guns, the constant Indian attacks? Well ... not exactly. It’s time to build our wagon, load up our supplies, and hit the trail in search of the truth!coach

Lesson Three
Wagons ho! Our wagon’s packed, our shoes are tied, our trusty oxen are by our side. It’s time to hit the trail, the Oregon Trail that is! We’re joining a band of settlers traveling across the North American continent to Oregon, where bountiful farmland and a better life awaits us all, we hope! Along the way, we’ll have to buy, hunt, and trade for the essentials we need to survive. And we’ll come to understand the perils of America’s expansion west (and the classic glee of catching dysentery!) while practicing map skills and simple math skills in adding, subtracting, calculating, estimating and adjusting. Giddyup!

Lesson Four

Ye Haul! It’s back to myth busting as we tackle bank robbers, wild outlaws, and the origin of cowboys (hint, they were around before anyone started calling a rock Plymouth)! We’ll discover cowboys that were forgot, the colorful history of the west, and a lady named after a stage coach. Then it’s time for a showdown! After all, according to legend cowboys played a lot of games and had some hot tempers (they might even have held grudges!) Now, that may or not be true, but playing games (and reviewing math skills) is always fun to do!

Lesson Five
Home, home on the range! Where the layout’s a little bit strange? It’s time to learn about western towns and the way things were in reality (vs. the version we see on T.V.) Then we’ll put up a sign that says ‘under construction’ and plan a layout for our own Stagecoach Junction! We’ll fill it with misfits, mysterious strangers, and merchants (and a few honest folks too!), and tell the story of old-you-know-who who founded the town (and whose ghost might still be hanging around!)

Lesson Six
We’re counting down our myth busting list and putting a cap on some things that we missed. Like the legend of Stetson and the hat that he wore! Then we’ll learn about hats and if they keep your head hot! (Some say they do and some say they do not!) If you’re cool headed, you’ll be ready indeed for hot head debates because in hot head debates the cool headed succeed!

Lesson Seven
Hold on to your hats we’re not through with you! There’s so much left in the Wild West to do! As we’ve traveled through this time we’ve met people and learned the colorful history of the Old West was a lot more colorful than we might have thought! It’s time to draw on a little of that history and create portraits of cowboys, settlers, and Indians of the Old West that we may have met or may meet as we blast through the past.

Lesson Eight

We’ve gone through our myths and we’re now down to one. The legend of the cowboy. The cowboy, or girl, and her gun. That sidekick, companion, and trusty old friend. Don’t tell us that’s false when we’re right at the end?! Well, you’ll have to find out as we travel on west and hear stories of shootouts (and find out who’s the best!) We’ll practice our aim (and earn ‘dead-eye’ fame) in a fun review and math-practice game!

Lesson Nine
In the 1880s, a wild menace haunted the Arizona territory. It was known as the Red Ghost, and its legend grew as it roamed the high country. It trampled a woman to death in 1883. It was rumored to stand 30 feet tall. A cowboy once tried to rope the Ghost, but it turned and charged his mount, nearly killing them both. One man chased it, then claimed it disappeared right before his eyes. Another swore it devoured a grizzly bear. We thirst for the truth and we’ve gotten practice chasing down myths, can we figure out if the Red Ghost really exists? Are you up for a challenge, do you thirst to know more? It’s time for adventure, a Ghost chase is in store!
